Jaan has been photographing the natural world for over 30 years. His main interests are landscapes, close-ups, and still life. His photographs are not intended to simply document. Rather, he strives to capture and convey the excitement of discovery, when a pattern, shape, or mood reveals itself. Often, images exclude elements that might reveal the scale or context of an image, rendering an abstract image. Jaan works primarily with traditional photographic equipment and techniques, while utilizing the latest printing techniques for the best, archival quality images. By using medium and large format film cameras, he is able to produce images with remarkable detail, and tonal quality, even in very large prints. Film photography is a link to the traditions of photography, and to the working practices of great photographers like Ansel Adams, Edward Weston, and Elliott Porter, his heroes. Jaan's images are in private and corporate collections, and are exhibited in juried art shows. Jaan is also a local Brooklinite.
